Royal Navy
The Royal Navy has been largely responsible for the influence and power the British have held for so long. For 250 years, from the 18th century until the mid 20th century, the Royal Navy was the largest and most powerful fleet on the seas. Today, the Royal Navy is second only to the United States Navy and remains a powerful force to be reckoned with. The flag of the Royal Navy has been in existance since 1801, The other naval ensigns that might be seen are the red ensign for civil ships which is essentially the same flag with no white on it and the blue ensign, which is a blue flag with the union jack in the canton. During World War II, the Royal Navy operated nearly 900 ships ranging from mine-sweepers to battleships and air craft carriers.
